How We Clean Ducts: Air Duct Cleaning Tools and Equipment
Proper air duct cleaning takes two things working together: agitation to knock debris loose from the inside of the ducts, and strong negative pressure to pull that debris out and capture it.
Here is a look at the tools Safety King technicians use, with unedited video from real residential jobs.
Safety King connects a truck-mounted Giant Power Vacuum to the duct system, then uses agitation tools like whips and spinning brushes to dislodge dust and debris, which the airflow carries out of the house and into the truck.
The Vacuum: Where the Debris Goes
Every cleaning starts with a powerful vacuum source. Safety King's truck-mounted Giant Power Vacuum is connected to the duct system with a large-diameter hose, often 8 inches across. That creates a strong airstream through the ducts toward the hose.
Anything knocked loose inside the ducts is drawn down the duct, into the hose and out to the truck, where it is captured outside the home. Safety King operates a fleet of these trucks across Southeast Michigan.
The Whip
A whip is an agitation tool with flexible lashes that spin and vibrate against the inside surfaces of the duct. It dislodges dust and debris clinging to the duct walls so the vacuum airflow can carry it away.
In this unedited video, Safety King technician Adam Spano uses a whip inside a residential air duct in Oakland County. The vacuum hookup is further down the duct, away from the camera.
The Spinning Brush
After the whip, a spinning brush is often used to finish a main duct, scrubbing off the last dust and debris on the inner surfaces. As it is knocked loose, the airflow pulls it away from the camera toward the vacuum.
Other Tools for Different Ducts
Different duct sizes, shapes and materials call for different tools. Safety King also uses tools like the reverse air snake, a compressed-air agitation tool whose backward-facing jets loosen debris and help move it toward the vacuum. Safety King's founder developed many of the cleaning tools that later became standard in the industry.

Why Portable Machines Fall Short
Small portable vacuums often cannot create enough airflow to pull debris through an entire duct system. Ask any duct cleaner what equipment they will use. Read How to Choose an Air Duct Cleaner for more questions to ask.
