Aeroseal Duct Sealing Results: Michigan Case Studies

Since 2011, Safety King has sealed duct systems with Aeroseal in homes and buildings across Southeast Michigan. Every job is measured before and after, so the results are documented, not estimated.

Here is a summary of results from Safety King jobs, plus what the numbers mean for comfort and energy use.

Typical Result

In most Southeast Michigan homes, Safety King's Aeroseal applications reduce measured duct leakage by roughly 90 percent. Every customer receives a computer-generated Certificate of Completion for the supply and return sides of the system.

How Results Are Measured

Aeroseal is a computer-controlled process. Before sealing, the system measures how much air the ducts leak, in cubic feet per minute (CFM). During sealing, polymer particles are carried through the pressurized ducts, collect at the edges of leaks and build up until the leaks are closed. Leaks up to about 5/8 inch wide can be sealed.

When the job is done, the system produces a before-and-after report for the supply side and the return side. That report shows exactly how much leakage was eliminated. Safety King cleans the ducts first so the sealant bonds to clean surfaces. Learn more in How Aeroseal Duct Sealing Works.

Safety King has also completed Aeroseal projects in Warren, Port Huron, Shelby Township, Macomb, Northville, Milford, Plymouth, Wyandotte, West Bloomfield, New Baltimore, South Lyon, Belleville, Detroit and Livonia. See detailed write-ups for Detroit and Livonia.

Why Results Are Not Always 100 Percent

Some leaks hidden behind walls are too large for the sealant to close, or are in sections that cannot be reached by the process. That is why a 90 percent reduction is considered an outstanding result. It still brings a significant improvement in efficiency and comfort.

Commercial and Multi-Unit Buildings

Aeroseal is also used in larger buildings. Industry case studies include a 19-story luxury condominium in Toronto, where builders reported duct leakage dropping from 200 to 300 CFM to as little as 6 CFM, and a 23-story, 308-unit high-rise in Camden, New Jersey, where sealing the vertical exhaust ducts reduced the energy needed to ventilate the apartments.

Is Your Home a Good Candidate?

The only way to know is to test. Safety King measures duct leakage first with Duct Blaster testing, then recommends sealing when the numbers show it is worth it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Aeroseal reduce duct leakage?
In most Southeast Michigan homes, Safety King's Aeroseal applications reduce measured duct leakage by roughly 90 percent. Individual results have ranged up to 94 percent and higher.
How do I know Aeroseal worked?
The process is computer-monitored. Safety King gives every Aeroseal customer a Certificate of Completion showing leakage before and after for the supply and return sides.
Why are the ducts cleaned before sealing?
Cleaning first removes dust and debris so the sealant can bond to the duct surfaces and so contaminants are not sealed inside the system.
Can Aeroseal be used in condos and commercial buildings?
Yes. Aeroseal is used in multi-unit residential and commercial buildings as well as single-family homes.
