Found Inside the Duct System

Loaded Handgun Found Inside Residential Ductwork

Safety King technicians have encountered plenty of unexpected debris and objects while cleaning residential duct systems.

One discovery required a very different response. During an air duct cleaning, technicians found a loaded handgun concealed inside the ductwork.

How the Handgun Was Discovered

The technicians first noticed that unusual material was present inside the duct system.

Foil-wrapped packages containing documents were found in one section of the ductwork and brought to the homeowner's attention.

As the cleaning continued, a technician noticed that his duct-cleaning brush was no longer rotating normally. As he retrieved the brush, he could hear that it was pulling something through the main trunk line.

The object was wrapped in insulation and masking tape.

Its shape made it apparent that it was a handgun.

What Happened Next

The technicians stopped and immediately notified the homeowner.

The homeowner contacted the police, and an officer arrived while the air duct cleaning was still underway.

The firearm was loaded. The responding officer took possession of the handgun and ammunition.

Once the situation had been handled by law enforcement, the technicians completed the scheduled duct cleaning.

Why This Discovery Was Different

Air ducts sometimes contain ordinary construction debris, household items, or objects that have fallen through registers.

A concealed firearm is obviously different.

The technicians did not attempt to handle the situation beyond what was necessary to identify the object and notify the homeowner. Law enforcement was brought in to take possession of the firearm.

That is the appropriate distinction when an unexpected object may present a safety or legal concern.

Safety King Has Found Some Unusual Things in Ductwork

Over decades of air duct cleaning, Safety King technicians have encountered jewelry, documents, money, household items, construction debris, and other objects inside ductwork. Most discoveries are simply unusual. Occasionally, as in this case, what is found requires a different response.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can objects really end up inside residential ductwork?
Yes. Items can enter through registers, construction openings, damaged areas, or sometimes be intentionally placed inside ductwork.
What should happen if a dangerous object is found in an air duct?
Work around the object should stop, and the homeowner or property representative should be notified. If the item may present a safety or legal concern, the appropriate authorities should handle it.
Does finding an object mean the entire duct system is contaminated?
No. An unusual object by itself does not establish the condition of the entire HVAC system. The surrounding ductwork should be evaluated based on what is actually found.
