Why Were Peanuts Found in the Air Duct System?
Safety King technicians have found plenty of unusual things inside duct systems over the years.
One of the more memorable discoveries was a pile of peanuts stored inside the blower compartment of a home's HVAC system. At first, the cause was not obvious.
What Was Inside the Blower Compartment?
Many of the peanuts were still unopened and appeared to have been deliberately collected rather than accidentally dropped into the system.
That made the source easier to narrow down.
The home was not new, so construction debris was unlikely to explain it. The pattern also did not look like something a homeowner had accidentally spilled.
The Cause: A Squirrel Had Entered the System
Further investigation showed that a squirrel had gained access to the duct or HVAC system and was using the blower compartment to store peanuts.
The openings that allowed access were screened afterward to help prevent animals from entering again.
It was an unusual discovery, but it illustrates an important point: unexpected material inside ductwork can sometimes be evidence of an access problem elsewhere in the system.
What If You Hear Something Unusual in Your Ductwork?
Sounds coming from ductwork do not automatically mean an animal is inside the system.
Metal ducts can expand and contract, airflow can create noise, and loose or damaged components can also produce unusual sounds.
But scratching, movement, debris, odors, or other unexplained signs may be worth investigating.
- Debris inside the system
- Evidence of animal access
- Damaged or disconnected ductwork
- Openings that may need to be sealed or screened
